Heiko Maschmann was born in 1967. He grew up in northern Germany at the shores of the baltic sea. At first he learned to play the organ and the piano.
At the age of 17 he started to play the double bass. Just 18 months later he was accepted as a student of a segment of the Musikhochschule Lübeck which was especially for students who still go to school.
After finishing the german gymnasium he began to study regularly in Lübeck. From 1987 until 1991 Jörg Linowitzki (Linos Ensemble, NDR-Symphonic Orchestra, Hamburg)was his teacher.
From 1991 on he continued his studies at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe working with Wolfgang Güttler (Berlin Philharmonic, Symphonyorchestra of the SWR, Baden-Baden, Trio Basso).

As a member of various student orchestras or ensembles he worked with the conductors L. Zagrosek, W. Lutoslawski, D. Geringas, Chr. Eschenbach, L. Bernstein (Schleswig-Holstein-Musikfestival-Orchestra), P. Boulez and K. Stockhausen (Junge Deutsche Philharmonie)
At the musical university Karlsruhe he was a member of the Ensemble for New Music.

In 1992 Heiko Maschmann received a scholarship of the “Villa Musica”-Foundation. In numerous chambermusic performances he played with U. Rhodenhäuser, M. Ostertag and D. Jensen.
He participated in masterclasses given by Thomas Brandis, Erich Penzel, Th. Fichter (Ensemble Modern), Ch. M. Lenale (Ensemble Intercontemporain) and P. Eötvös.

Heiko Maschmann is a member of the Kiel Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally he has appeared with the Baroque Soloists Kiel, the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonic Octet.

He was invited to numerous festivals in Europe like Musiksommer Mecklenburg Vorpommern, Rheingau Musikfestival, Chiffren, Provinzlärm, Blurred Edges, Angelica Bologna and Frankfurt Feste as an ensemble player and a soloist.

Collaborating with the Stockhausen-Foundation for Music since 2008, Heiko Maschmann gave the world premiere of „IN FREUNDSCHAFT“ for double bass solo by Karlheinz Stockhausen in the year 2009.

In collaboration with Kathinka Pasveer he edited the score of IN FREUNDSCHAFT at the Stockhausen Edition in 2010.

At the beginning of 2012 he produced a CD-recording of this work as a commission for the Stockhausen Complete Edition.
This recording was highly praised by the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik and was the recommendation of the month.

Beside this he published print editions of Double Bass works at Music Finland and Verlag Sikorski.

Heiko Maschmann is a member of the Ensemble Xtuor, the ensemble reflexion K and Ensemble Klangrauschen.
He has also performed with the Zagros Ensemble, Helsinki, the „ensemble acht“, the Ensemble Resonanz, the London Sinfonietta and the Ensemble Modern.

He collaborated with Peter Veal,Simon Stockhausen, Ann Noel and Mary Bauermeister.

He also appears as a performer of Fluxus works.

Heiko Maschmann recorded both ensemble works and solo repertoire for numerous CD lables all over the world. As a member of the ensemble reflexion K  was nominated for the "Bestenliste des Preises der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik" in 2016. 

He was the artistical co-director of the New-Music-Concert-Saison "Klangrauschen" in Lübeck and Kiel.

Additionally he teached „Music, Performance Art and Notation“ at the Muthesius Acadamy of Fine Arts, Kiel.

Heiko Maschmann played numerous important world premieres - e.g. by Peter Ruzicka, Joan La Barbara,  Rolf Riehm, Cristóbal Halffter, Georg Katzer, Emiliano Turazzi, Dieter Schnebel and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Currently he works on world premiers of compositions for double bass solo by Gerald Eckert and Sir James McMillan.



Heiko Maschmann wurde 1967 in Neustadt an der Ostsee geboren und spielte zunächst Klavier und Orgel. Erst im Alter von 17 Jahren begann er mit dem Kontrabaßspiel. Bereits nach 18 Monaten wurde er als Jungstudent in die Musikhochschule Lübeck aufgenommen. Dort absolvierte er auch von 1987 bis 1991 sein Haupstudium bei Prof . Jörg Linowitzki (Linos Ensemble, NDR-Sinfonieorchester). Anschließend wechselte er zu Prof. Wolfgang Güttler (Berliner Philharmoniker, Sinfonieorchester des SWR, Trio Basso).
