Heiko Maschmann wurde 1967 in Neustadt an der Ostsee geboren und spielte zunächst Klavier und Orgel. Erst im Alter von 17 Jahren begann er mit dem Kontrabaßspiel. Bereits nach 18 Monaten wurde er als Jungstudent in die Musikhochschule Lübeck aufgenommen. Dort absolvierte er auch von 1987 bis 1991 sein Haupstudium bei Prof . Jörg Linowitzki (Linos Ensemble, NDR-Sinfonieorchester). Anschließend wechselte er zu Prof. Wolfgang Güttler (Berliner Philharmoniker, Sinfonieorchester des SWR, Trio Basso).
